Together with a nation of passionate allies, we advocate for prevention, magnify support, and accelerate research to end this disease. Inequities in colorectal cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment among the most vulnerable communities continue to persist. Our programs are designed to put health equity first. We are working towards the ambitious vision of ending colorectal cancer in our lifetime. We plan to achieve this vision by:
- investing and influencing $500 million in research while helping to drive the annual overall nationwide investment for colorectal research to $600 million annually by 2028.
- building and serving the world’s largest community and data set of colorectal patients to raise the five-year survival of mCRC from 13% to 35%.
- leveraging screening and prevention efforts to raise the screening rate to 80% and save 100,000 lives.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) at the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (the Alliance) will set the vision for and oversee the implementation of the Alliance’s development strategy. This strategy includes leading and nurturing a culture of philanthropy within the organization, driving accountability for exceeding revenue goals and exemplifying donor- centricity across all development activity. The CDO ensures the organization has the resources needed to deliver its mission and that the organization’s culture, systems, and procedures support exceptional fund development.
The CDO maintains accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources for all lanes of revenue; Corporate, Consumer Brands & Foundation Giving, Industry Giving, Individual Giving, Peer-to-Peer Giving, and Special Events. The CDO will manage a portfolio of major donors and corporate supporters who are making six-figure and greater gifts to the Alliance annually. They will report to, and work closely with, the CEO. The CDO will supervise 5 senior leaders and a Development Team of 15 people, and lead revenue growth from $21M to 60M in 3 years utilizing major gifts, consumer brands, and evolving the culture to a model of volunteer and community lead and staff support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Executive Leadership (20%)
- Collaborate with the CEO, Executive Team, and Board in setting and driving development goals and revenue building vision and strategy.
- Support the Executive Team and the Board of Directors in future revenue growth infrastructure and strategy.
- Model and foster a commitment to philanthropy within the Alliance’s internal staff culture and external volunteer teams.
- Build and maintain trusting relationships with Executives, all members of the Leadership Team, the Board of Directors, donors, funders, partners, and stakeholders.
- Development Strategy & Revenue Generation (50%)
- Lead the strategic planning effort and guide the Development Directors to develop actionable plans, set measurable goals, and evaluate progress as the Alliance works to grow to $60M in three years.
- Analyze development initiatives and activities comprehensively to understand the success and opportunities for future revenue potential with the expectation that the Alliance will increase from $21M to $60M in 3 years.
- Work hand in hand with the CEO on the execution of the $100M Project Cure CRC fundraising campaign.
- Provide the organization and Executive Team with subject matter expertise on fund development and fundraising best practices.
- Research opportunities to receive grants, sponsorships, investments, and donations from individuals and partners, and stay ahead of being on top of fundraising trends.
- Carry a portfolio of at least 100 donors and prospective donors who can make 6 and 7 figure gifts.
- Development Team Leader (30%)
- Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual revenue planning.
- Manage the current team of 5 direct reports and 15 total team members on the development team and inspire and motivate the entire organization of leaders and staff.
- Oversee revenue goals and results of each diverse revenue lane, building a highly driven team of fundraisers and a culture of philanthropy that ensures team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met.
REQUIREMENTS:
The CDO will be an experienced leader with at least 10 years of broad development leadership experience in a high-growth and dynamic environment. The CDO will have experience cultivating high-net worth individuals, strategizing revenue producing campaigns, leading celebrity donation campaigns, a proven record of significant event fundraising planning/execution, and leading revenue driving leaders and departments within a diverse and complex organization. The CDO must be energized by leading and inspiring a team and personally show an eagerness to try creative approaches to build fundraising revenue with significant sustainable and scalable growth initiatives.
The CDO will have the following experience and attributes:
- Five or more years of experience in an executive-level development leadership role specializing in high-net worth donors with extensive networks, healthcare organizations, corporate entities, and leading complex fundraising campaigns and strategy.
- A minimum of a BA or BS in Business, Philanthropy, or related field; master’s preferred.
- Experience creating, implementing and evaluating multifaceted development growth strategies for a complex non-profit or organization.
- Excellent leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and deep personal integrity.
- Demonstrated success building relationships with direct reports, colleagues, leadership, and key stakeholders.
- Strong financial skills and experience translating a strategic vision into a development and operational model.
- Understanding of advanced development planning and regulatory issues.
- An excellent communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information, skilled public speaker for the mission and fundraising opportunities.
- A collaborative and flexible style with a strong service mentality.

COMPENSATION
The Colorectal Cancer Alliance offers a minimum salary of $225,000 for this role.
The exact salary and bonus potential will be based on experience aligned to the role and responsibilities.
