San Diego is Ready to Hit the Streets in Boxers and Briefs

The 10th annual San Diego Undy RunWalk, presented by national non-profitColorectal Cancer Alliance, will take place on Saturday, March 2, at Mission Bay Park in San Diego.
Held during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, the race raises awareness for the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Colorectal cancer claims over 5,000 lives each year in California and is expected to claim 5,290 lives in 2019, according to the American Cancer Society.
Even though colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, it is also among the most preventable and treatable type of cancers. The five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer found at the local stage is 90 percent, compared to 14 percent for colorectal cancer found at distant stages.
The Undy RunWalk event is a key fundraising source for the Alliance and for colorectal cancer awareness and research for the San Diego area. This year, the run walk aims to raise $69,000, which will fund national prevention, research and patient support programs through the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
Locally, the race benefits the California Colorectal Cancer Coalition, or C4, an organization that has awarded more than $200,000 in San Diego County to increase colorectal can screening and awareness.
The Alliance provides funding support for C4 grants that provide free colonoscopies to the uninsured in San Diego County. The program has identified cancer in several individuals, who then receive free treatment.
“This is an absolutely essential program because San Diego has no safety net hospital for uninsured patients,” said Dr. Daniel Anderson, C4’s board of directors president. “Screening is the No. 1 way to save lives, and every person deserves access.”
The San Diego Undy RunWalk is a 5K course, approximately 3.1 miles, and includes a one-mile fun run, which is untimed. People of all ages and fitness levels attend. There are medals for the top three finishers in each age group and all fundraising participants receive a pair of Alliance’s famous undies for their run or walk.
The San Diego Undy RunWalk is sponsored locally by Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health and #SWEmpireOnWheels.
